From Where We Lay
From where we lay, there is no day, and night cannot intrude
No flower grows, no river flows, no noise can enter rude
From where we lay, no one can say they there would rather be
No turning leaf; all is surcease, no sights for eyes to see
It was not so in time's echo, when life within us coursed
When goals were set, and, if not met, still did our path endorse
We reached for stars, discoursed with czars, cavorted in our dreams
We freed our souls, we pranced like foals, in sunny meadow streams
Drew clouds above, declared our love, thought time an endless
string
We quoted bards, we wove canards, and with devotion fling
A zest to life, emotions rife, but we could not fortell
That time does pass, and from our grasp, the days left did dispel
In thinking back, ere fade to black, there came times where we
failed
To seize the day, to doubts allay, our coming fates bewailed
Brown faded grey, dusk grasped the day, our youth did pass from
view
Dreams did dissolve, and we devolved our passion - days too few
In chapter last, we made outcast our revelations rogue
We marched in step, opinions kept, attention paid to vogue
No longer thought that all lives sought their moment on the stage
We waited still - poised on the hill - for the turning of the
page
From where we lay, there is no day, and night cannot intrude
No flower grows, no river flows, no noise can enter rude
From where we lay, we cannot say that time ticks by well measured
Learn what you will; we'll now keep still, no longer life's small
pleasure.
