From Where We Lay
Silence
Into the Bay
Hesitant
Out of place
Intrusive
Uninvited...
We know you're not looking for us
We know we won't last, hitting the warm ground
We know you curse us and admire us all at once
"First snow of winter," you say wonderously
"Damned winter is on its way," you say derisively
Every one of us that touches the earth takes its toll
The soil cools a bit more with each dying crystal
Lengthening chilly nights rob yet more warmth
A lowering distant sun selfishly hoards its heat
Until, one day, sooner than later
We come to visit
And we stay
For the season
Oh, we'll be gone come Spring
But the heart of us
The eternal part of us
The water
It cycles back around
And around
And around
Until one day
In that shape you know so well
Hesitant
Out of place
Intrusive
Uninvited...
