W.Va. Makes English Its Official Language

A lot of people are not going to agree with this but I think it’s great.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Two days after the end of the legislative session, state lawmakers are discovering something few were aware of: They voted to make English the official language of West Virginia.

The language amendment was quietly inserted into a bill addressing the number of members that cities can appoint to boards of parks and recreation. Among mundane details about record-keeping, the amendment adds the provision that “English shall be the official language of the State of West Virginia.”

Efforts to make English the state’s official language have been introduced annually since the late 1990s. A group called U.S. English has championed the cause.

Andrew Schneider, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia, said English-only laws are based on the false premise that immigrants will not learn English without government coercion.

Coercion?? What a ridiculous charge and only goes to show how the ACLU can only thrive by keeping minorities and immigrants from fully reaching their potential.

Decent paying jobs are hard to come in our state even if you are educated and able to speak the language. That’s why many of us are forced to drive long distances out of state to find employment.

The ACLU should just admit that in their view immigrants are worthy of only 2 things, either apple picking or welfare because without language skills that is all that is available.

The ACLU has conservatives working for it. I’m curious how you think these conservatives would work for the ACLU under the circumstances you’re alledging.

That doesn’t matter and I don’t care who is working for them. The organization has lost control of it’s original intent and is more of a problem than a solution.

So tell me Carla do you really have a problem with making english WV’s official language? If so why?

It isn’t like anyone is being forced at gun point to learn it, this just gives the person more of an incentive.

keep in mind my post above this one, I don’t want you getting all annoyed if it takes me a day or two to respond.

  3. I notice that Carla neatly avoids the subject of your post.

We do immigrants no good by pandering to the PC crowd and putting up dual English-Spanish signs everywhere, like at ATMs. In order to prosper economically in this country you need to learn English, plain and simple. And the best way to encourage people to learn it is to have everything in English.
